I received the dreaded HAL.DLL Missing or Corrupt message on my Desktop PC. Following on-line advice I managed to resolve the issue, or so I thought. My PC will no longer power down when selecting the Windows XP Shut Down button. It is possible that I have loaded in the non acpi compliant HAL instead of the acpi compliant version. That in itself should be easy to resolve. However, when I open up the Device Manager and expand the Computer branch I find I have two specifications that appear, namely ACPI Multiprocessor PC and Standard PC. As my PC is ACPI compliant, I wish to delete the Standard PC specification, as Im sure it must be causing a conflict. I cant find a delete option. Id be most grateful for any advice on how to proceed. Sounds like you replaced the existing hal.dll file with hal.dll, instead of using the Halmacpi.dll file renamed to hal.dll Did you also replace the ntoskrnl.exe and ntkrnlpa.exe files? Windows won't let you uninstall the one it is currently using in Device Manager, so there won't be an uninstall option for the Standard PC entry. The ACPI Multiprocessor PC one should have an uninstall option though, which would confirm it's not using it. There are 7 different versions of the hal.dll file. When Windows XP is installed, it selects the correct file from one of the following and renames it to hal.dll. I had a computer shop (that is now 2000 miles away) install a new mobo in my Sony Vaio vgn-ar150g. All was fine until I went to install Windows 7, and lo and behold, a error message. It seems the Sony updates use the machine serial number in the bios to install, as does the factory restore discs. Didn't know this until I went to update. Now I'm stuck in El Paso nowhere near a Sony service Center. And my fresh new Vaio Win 7 laptop has no sound or other fetures. Is there a way to change the serial number in the Phoenix Bios? Anyone have any ideas for this? Thats a good point but unfortunately the connection is symmetrical. Pins 1 and 8 are one transformer circuit, pins 3 and 5 are another and pins 4 and 6 are another. If you invert this they also fit into the transformer circuits. I already tried to connect it the way I thought it was before but nothing happened, no power LED, no smoke so now I'm afraid to try it again, I don't know if I blew the power circuit up because its the other way around and I don't want to take any mode risks.
